It seems that free browser-based games are supported by banner ads and players who pay for upgrades. Even then, the budget for browser-based games must be minuscule compared with EA or blizzard and is probably to blame for the incremental development and lack of overall creativity in the browser-based game industry. Bigpoint has nice graphics, but they seem to be all the same remake of games that emphasize economies of resources, expansion, offense/defense, and alliances with a few FPS graphics thrown in. Every player has the same career path in these games and it becomes quite repetitive. But I suppose it would take real effort and funding to break away from the cookie cutter template that the majority of developers are using...sigh....
Maybe I'm being a bit cynical, but I figure you get what you pay for. Since we're playing a browser-based game, we should expect a few little glitches here and there, ads, and fewer players to contend with. If I had to pay for the experience I am enjoying right now, I would find a different game to play.
